Rescued Animals Need More Space in Asia

Efforts to stop illegal trade of endangered animals are gaining strength insome areasincluding Southeast Asia. But nowofficials must decide what todo with the thousands of animals rescued every year.
This issue is evident at the Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center, not farfrom Phnom Penh in Cambodia.
Gibbons – a kind of ape – call across the 2,400 hectares of protected forest.Their voices sometimes can be heard joining with those of rare birds andother endangered animals.
Many of the animals arrived at the rescue center after being seized byCambodia’s Wildlife Rapid Rescue Team. The team includes Cambodiangovernment officials and military policeOther help comes from the WildlifeAlliance, a non-profit group based in the United States.
Every year the team rescues hundreds of endangered animalsCambodianshelp to make these rescues possible by calling a special telephone hotline
huge amount of money is exchanged in the illegal trade of animals. It is the world’s third largest black marketafter sales of arms and drugsWellorganized criminal groups and corrupt or uncaring officials remove speciesfrom the wild faster than they can reproduce.
The Phnom Tamao Rescue Center is home to about 100 sun bears. That is the largest population of sun bears in captivity. A number of moon bears alsolive there.
One expert says the whole protected area would support only a single bear in the wild. That is the opinion of Anuradha Jayasinghetechnical adviser with agroup called Free the Bears. Two bears were set free after they regained theirhealth over time in another part of the countryThey did well for about threemonths. But then:
They both got snared again by poachers.  So that’s the main issue inCambodia is the hunting. It’s just the forests aren’t safe at the moment forreleasing bears. And in the forests which probably, we might be able to ((release animals)) are full of mines.”
More than 2,000 rare turtles were returned to their native wild home inIndonesia in FebruaryThese creatures were taken from wildlife traffickers.They had been seized a month earlier in Hong Kong
Pangolins are often called scaly anteatersThey are sometimes hunted forfood and medicineThose abilities have led them to become the most oftenseized mammal in Asia’s wildlife trade. The Worldwatch Institute says that has caused a great loss of their populations in CambodiaVietnam and Laos
Thailand forms a major point of transport for smugglers.  Officials therereported seizing more than 10,000 live animals and 1,300 animal remains lastyear.

One of Tokyo’s mainstay tourist attractions is Harajuku, a labyrinthine shopping district jammed with trend-obsessed teenagers parading famously outlandish fashions. But in spite of Harajuku’s youthful flash and flair, to walk around the city is to realize that Japan is a country of old people. Gray-haired grandpas zip past on bicycles, impressing with their cavalier attitude toward traffic. Immaculately coifed senior women do the same, their faces freshly powdered and lipsticked, their flowered shirts neatly pressed.
A couple of weeks ago, I escaped the pounding dance music and permed, bleach-blond denizens of Harajuku — and its pricey shopping options — for its less frenetic, old-school antithesis: Sugamo, known locally as Grannies’ Harajuku, a neighborhood 30 minutes north on the Yamanote train line. Sugamo is famous in its own right, for a lengthy shopping street, Jizo Dori, that caters not to crazily dressed youngsters but to their elders. And, most important for the budget-conscious, on this avenue, with its mix of Buddhist temples and old-fashioned markets, cafes and bakeries, the prices are right. With the area’s growing population of pensioners, they have to be.

Indigenous community sentences FARC ‘killers’ to decades in prison

Tensions between a southwest Colombia indigenous community and local FARC rebels have risen after seven guerrillas were given decades in prison for their involvement in the killings of two men, while the community received death threats.
The seven rebels, themselves indigenous, were given up to 6o years in prison, while the minors involved were given lashes and time in a rehabilitation center until another trial is held when they reach adulthood, according to weekly Semana.

http://colombiareports.co/tensions-farc-indigenous-community-killings/The Nasa community trial, in which 5,000 members participated, came less than a week after indigenous guards on a reservation in the southwestern Cauca state were killed reportedly after a discussion with a group of guerrilla fighters over propaganda posters commemorating the death of “Alfonso Cano,” one of FARC’s late leaders.
